Jo is a full-time artist and letterpress printer. Her multi-passionate practice includes painting, drawing, collage and assemblage and the handcrafting of everyday goods such as stationery, books and textiles.
Jo creates abstract artworks that piece together disparate forms or elements to create a sense of harmony. They are humble and poetic, intended to channel raw truths, inspired by the natural rhythms of life. Currently focused on creating larger works with paint and fabric, and smaller works of collage and assemblage, the artist employs a nuanced process of layering to create meaning. Jo paints, sands, scratches, stitches, collages and resists to build these layers, believing it a very human way to work. The way that marks hold their energy is also central to Jo’s work. Marks must have a vulnerability to them; an ability to convey some visceral feeling.
Jo also makes goods that bring her artworks into the everyday. Her notebooks, greeting cards and paper goods are skilfully designed, assembled and letterpress printed by her in-house and her textile pieces such as zippered purses, tea towels and soft furnishings bring an artful simplicity to home and place.
After almost ten years as the co-founder of Olive Letterpress (formerly Olive & The Volcano) her eponymous studio aims to combine her varied skills, passions, processes and materials under one label. Her work has been seen in Country Style Magazine, Peppermint Magazine, Inside Out Magazine, Home Beautiful, Uppercase, Fashion Journal and at the The Big Design Markets and Finders Keepers Markets throughout Australia. Jo's stationery ranges have been distributed throughout Asia and have been included in retail stores throughout Australia, Europe and the United States. She was awarded the prize for Art & Illustration in the inaugural Australian Etsy Design Awards.
Her artwork has been acquired by the Ballina Shire as part of their Corporate Collection and is included in private collections in Australia and Internationally. Her work can also be seen in commercial spaces such as the W Hotel in Brisbane Australia.
Jo's original artworks can also be found on Tricera in Japan and as Artist Edition prints via Fine Print Co in Australia.
Jo works from her Tweed Valley hinterland studio in Northern New South Wales, Australia.
